Custom Systems vs. Off-The-Shelf
As an independent computer consultant, I have many sources for systems, parts, and peripherals. While many off-the-shelf systems are very affordable these days, the custom option should always be investigated prior to making a 'buy' decision.
Computers advertised for as little as $399 will almost always come with a hook - an AOL subscription or other such 'cost-adder' that can amount to hunderds or thousands of dollars by the time it is paid for. Another big part of the 'buy' decision is the warranty - no small concern for most tech shoppers. Just remember that most warranties cover only the hardware included in the system and NOT any issue arising from virus / spyware / or other such attacks. The hardware I use and that of the major manufacturers are the same - the only difference is that they buy in the thousands and I buy one or two at a time. And their warranty usually requires that you ship the unit back to them (freight being paid at least one way by you) - where you can wait 2-4 weeks or more before you get your system back. They also cannot guarantee that you will not lose all of your important data and files.
My warranty is simple: 90 days on parts - 1 year on labor. And if you do get a virus or spyware infection, I am always available at your location to get you up and running again at my standard service rate of $40 per hour. Because I honor my warranties, I make sure that it comes preloaded will all the virus and other protection software available in the price of every system I deliver.
So if you're shopping for a new system or adding to your existing computing capability, please consider a system featured at NEW Explorer / Duffy PC. I offer both off-the-shelf major brands as well as custom-built systems - including refurbished units that can save you a bunch of money and are usually good enough for your needs.
